Description Introduction Waste management has become one of the major challenges in urban and rural areas due to the rapid increase in population and daily waste generation. Improper segregation of waste at the source leads to environmental pollution, health hazards, and inefficient recycling processes. Manual segregation is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and often unhygienic. The Advanced Waste Segregator with GSM is an automated smart system designed to segregate different types of waste efficiently using sensor-based technology. The system uses sensors such as a Moisture Sensor to detect wet waste, a Metal Detector to identify metallic objects, and an IR Sensor to detect waste presence. A microcontroller processes the sensor data and controls the servo motor mechanism to automatically direct waste into the appropriate bin. Additionally, the system integrates a GSM module that sends notifications or alerts regarding bin status, system updates, or overflow conditions. An LCD display provides real-time information about detected waste type and system status. This project combines embedded systems and automation to create a smart, efficient, and hygienic waste segregation solution suitable for smart cities and sustainable waste management systems. Objectives To design and develop an automated waste segregation system using sensor-based technology. To automatically classify waste into categories such as wet, dry, and metallic waste. To reduce manual handling of waste and improve hygiene and safety. To integrate a GSM module for sending real-time notifications and alerts. To provide live system monitoring using an LCD display. To improve recycling efficiency through proper waste segregation at the source. To create a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable smart waste management solution. BLOCK DIAGRAM SMART WASTE SEGREGATOR WITH GSM Module COMPONENTS ARDUINO (MICROCONTROLLER) BATTERY VOLTAGE REGULATOR SERVO MOTOR METAL DETECTOR MOISTURE SENSOR RELAY DC MOTOR LCD DISPLAY POWER HUB GSM IR SENSOR SOFTWARE Arduino IDE Methodology The methodology of the Advanced Waste Segregator with GSM is developed through a structured process that includes designing the overall system architecture, selecting appropriate sensors, and integrating automation mechanisms for efficient waste segregation. The system uses an IR sensor to detect the presence of waste, a moisture sensor to identify wet waste, and a metal detector to recognize metallic objects. All sensor inputs are sent to the microcontroller (Arduino), where programmed logic compares the sensor values with predefined thresholds to determine the type of waste. Based on the detected category (wet, dry, or metal), the microcontroller controls a servo motor mechanism that automatically directs the waste into the appropriate bin. An LCD display is integrated to provide real-time information about detected waste type and system status. Additionally, a GSM module is connected to enable remote monitoring and to send SMS alerts when bins are full or when system updates are required. The system is powered using a regulated power supply to ensure stable operation of sensors and control units. Finally, the complete setup is tested under different waste conditions to verify sensor accuracy, servo movement precision, GSM communication reliability, and overall system efficiency.
